Spreading junipers down both sides of the shed, about three years in and grown out past where they were wanted. Nothing was wrong with them, the owner just wanted them gone. Ten junipers in all, plus a dogwood, a hydrangea, a silver shrub and an ornamental grass.
Rock came off the beds first and got set aside. Each shrub was cut back to the crown, then a trench spade run around it to slice the roots, and a sawzall to cut a wide circle through anything the spade would not take. Young spreading juniper roots run shallow and light, so most lifted without having to be pried out. The variegated dogwood was the one that fought back: two crowns and suckering, and the slowest item on the job by a long way.
Once the roots were out, the holes were filled with new topsoil, tamped, topped up again, then the original rock went back over and got washed down. Everything that came out left with us. Two days, both of them around ninety degrees.
